My first ever floor plan! Hand drawn for my Diploma with the @thenationaldesignacademy (9 yrs ago)!

I remember doing a Google search one evening, all those years ago, looking for CAD software and I stumbled upon this thing called @sketchup_official

I remember it so vividly!

I lost an entire weekend, becoming familiar with its interface and feeling overjoyed that I had found it.

I STILL feel overjoyed! SketchUp changed my life. It set me onto a path of self discovery. I attained my Diploma but withdrew from my Interior Design degree when I realised that my interest in 3D Visualisation and CAD software/SketchUp, superseded my love for Interior Design.

I embarked on a journey of self teaching that helped me create a freelance service for Interior Designers. My idols! I was still working 9-5 in my office job but was glad of the opportunity that SketchUp had provided. My goal at that stage was to eventually work part-time in my office job (I could NEVER leave my actual job, who does that?!) so that I could focus on my 3D Visualisation role. I had no real focus or structure. I was kinda all over the place if I’m honest.

But little did I know that the Universe had other plans for me.

Three years after I first discovered SketchUp (and became very proficient at providing a 3D Visualisation service), fate came knocking. The Civil Service announced an unprecedented number of voluntary redundancies.

Every bone in my body said no but my heart kept saying yes. My friends, colleagues and even my family looked at me with concern when I confirmed my intent to leave the only job I had ever known. I was petrified but also beyond excited of the huge curveball I had thrown AT MY OWN LIFE!

And here I am; the Founder of the SketchUp Hub, an online platform & community that supports women learning SketchUp. Women who are also embarking on a journey of self discovery.

Like I said, SketchUp changed my life!

Watch me provide an Interior Designer with feedback on her SketchUp floor plan! Tessa was experiencing problems trying to remove unnecessary geometry of a rug and asked for help. While providing her with support I also noticed a few areas that required attention and brought these to her attention.

We provide feedback to SketchUp Hub students and followers all the time because helping to improve standards in the Interior Design industry is important to us.

Huge congrats to SketchUp Hub student, Claudia for submitting her technical floor plan for her Interior Design course today! Claudia, is studying with @theinteriordesigninstitute and was required to produce a detailed floor plan communicating her space planning considerations for the ground floor of a family home.

Claudia decided to take our Student Bundle course which includes a Bonus course for IDI students and created a technical drawing using @sketchup_official which follows technical drawing conventions like a border, title block & key, annotations and dimensions, and all to scale!

A superbly presented floor plan, which is accurate, precise and highly professional in appearance!

Elevations can be as detailed, conceptual or as whimsical as you wish. This render of a kitchen elevation shows enough of the main elements of the design to inform the client: wall colour, tiles, cabinet colour, handle design, worktop and decorative accessories. Full wall elevations can be provided as quick (black and white) technical drawings. You don’t need to spend hours and hours producing full renders of spaces (unless the client requests these).

Providing snapshots like this elevation is such a visually striking way to convey your designs. They show artistic flair, strong technical skill and allow you to stand out.

I show you how to create floor plans and elevations in my current SketchUp bundle course, including how to apply shadows/highlights to your plans to make ‘em pop! I also show you how to transform them into a watercolour illustration.
