We haven’t created a new photoreal design scheme using SketchUp and V-Ray for so long! So we decided to create a modern bedroom using a statement wallpaper and pops of colour via bedroom furniture and contemporary art. Also a great way to look forward to brighter days ahead, with the onset of Spring.
After some Googling we settled for Farrow & Ball’s Bamboo wallpaper in black and white. It’s a high contrast pattern, with the pared back colour palette calming things down a little, to stop things feeling too overwhelming.

Next, I turned my attention to the bed and opted for an oversized, pink velvet headboard. Yes, this is high impact and there’s no better way to do that than with PINK! Then I added striking blue bedside tables with rattan detailing. It sounds horrible, right?!
But I beg to differ!

This is the thing with photoreal 3D visualisation – there’s no misunderstanding or miscommunication. It does exactly what it’s supposed to and that’s to clearly convey all aspects of an interior design scheme: from the soft furnishings and art selections, right down to the flooring.
I’ve added artificial lighting in this V-Ray render, which is something I don’t normally do (I talk about this in more detail in my online SketchUp and V-Ray course) but I felt it highlighted the art beautifully.
The colour palette in this design is quite minimal because the pattern on the wall is so overpowering – I struggled to find the right patterned throw for the bed and tried out a few different options (one of the BIGGEST benefits of using 3D visualisation!), but finally settled on the Scion pattern because it doesn’t compete with the wallpaper but still complements it due to the use of black. I should add that I reduced the scale of the Scion pattern, though!
I love the wall art because it’s so contemporary and contrasts wonderfully with the monochromatic pattern of the wallpaper. This is by a Belfast Artist called Majukooo and she does wonderful portraits and excels at depicting movement and mood!

I decided to include lovely walnut table lamps and a kooky vase from Habitat to add a little bit of visual interest. I think it works really well! This was a lovely way to ease myself back into some interior design.
