There’s a few reasons why this is such a HUGE game-changer (and why so many SketchUp users have been requesting this for a while!):

-: SketchUp has reduced the free trial to only 7 days (it used to be 30 days), so this means that if you’re a new user, you have a bit of breathing space once the free trial ends to continue familiarising yourself with the software. Let’s be honest, 7 days really isn’t adequate to sample new software but I do understand that SketchUp is a business and needs to consider the financial impact of a 30 day free trial.

-: Availing of a SketchUp monthly license when you don’t use SketchUp regularly enough to justify the annual subscription makes sense. Maybe you’re just starting out in business; or only use SketchUp on large projects with bigger budgets. Either way the monthly paid option for SketcUp Pro provides more flexibility.

-: It’s useful for those who are still learning. For example, my new SketchUp and V-Ray online course for Interior Designers requires the SketchUp Pro software, in addition to the V-Ray and Photoshop software. I get it, all of these software applications add up in terms of $$$ and trying to learn photoreal rendering in 7 days (in terms of the free SketchUp Pro trial), is a tight squeeze. It is possible to take my course in two weeks, so again the monthly paid option gives you more breathing space to sign up to SketchUp (you could take advantage of the free 30 day trial of V-Ray at the same time), before committing to the annual SketchUp Pro license.

-: It keeps the customer happy! SketchUp said it themselves; ‘YOU ASKED, WE DELIVERED’. It also aligns SketchUp with other design software applications out there that offer monthly payment subscriptions.

  1. Yes, monthly Sketchup is good for occasional users and for cash flow, but it’s not cheap. If you use Sketchup for more than 8 months each year you will pay more.

If you choose to buy monthly, make sure to go into your account and de-select auto-renew. If you don’t Sketchup will take payment for the next renewal without asking you.

At the moment you can only get this from Sketchup in the USA, so you will only get support during Mountain Standard Time (GMT -7 hrs) and by e-mail. This is not normally a problem but something to be aware of. Hopefully, Sketchup will allow UK resellers (like myself) to accept monthly payments soon.

    • Hi Geoff! I completely agree with you – long term it’s much wiser to purchase the annual SketchUp Pro license but there will be times when people need short term use and I think this has been a user request for a long time. So I guess SketchUp felt under pressure to provide it as an option.

Excellent point about deselecting auto-renew! I hope you’re able to sell monthly subscriptions soon too!
